Tier-1 VISA questions

Post by sumanthsarma » Wed Jun 10, 2009 1:42 am

Hi all,

I am planning to apply for Tier-1 HSMP, I had few questions.

1) I have been living in US for 7 years, do I still need to provide/prove english proficiency?.
2) I heard it takes 3 months to get your VISA, if I decide to go to my home country. How can I manage without my passport for so long?. Is there any alternative?.

Can someone provide me a checklist, if possible.

Thanks.

Guidance notes page 31 states:

Nationals of the majority English speaking countries listed below automatically meet the English language requirement: USA etc.

So if you are citizen of US then I think you can use it. If your University is listed in PBS calculator then you don't need to provide proof.
2) I heard it takes 3 months to get your VISA, if I decide to go to my home country. How can I manage without my passport for so long?. Is there any alternative?.
It depends on from where you are applying. I read in this forum that few members from US got approval with 3 weeks. I would advice to apply from US only instead of Home Country.

Yes,, chethan is right... it is max 3weeks... in US.. most of the cases i came across got it in 1st week only..

In india it takes around 2-4weeks... apart few lucky guys got in 2-3days also..

But since u have all the docs from bank, employer etc.. from US better apply from there..

Can you guys send me the checklist for people residing in US?.
And is it ok to live in US without passport for so long?(considering the current situation).

I am not a citizen, but i do not intend to wait for the process.

Which "current situation" are you talking about?

I didn't understand your query. If you apply from US, you will be sending your application/passport to British High Commission in US. Your passport will never leave US(also it is illegal). BHC in US will be assessing your application. When you apply, BHC in US will send you acknowledgement letter confirming that you have applied for Tier 1. In case if you have to show you passport to US authorities you can show that letter. It is not illegal.

Alright. someone told me passport would go to UK, kind of what I thought would not happen. But well if it is in US, that is better.

Current situation - People are blocking us in every possible way, I am on H-1B and do not expect to have my extension done smoothly.

Can someone please send me a checklist?.

I sw some posts in the last month from ppl who applied from US. The list of document is the same for everyone and you should look (1) the guidance notes & (2) some relevant posts on the forum (some have extensive list of what you need). If you still have problems, post your query and ppl will help you quickly.
