Shout 99 claims "they" did research. Actually this was first published by BBC and not Shout99. The link is below:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8077579.stm

Let's be practical, If I am running a business and not making profit, I will make every efforts to reduce cost and maximise profits. So are these companies doing. Who want to hire expensive contractors who sit on things and charge £500-£1000 a day. If I have to get projects rolling, whicih inturn bring me some cash flow and also reduce cost...I would do the same thing.
No offense to any contractor.

"Uproar against Indian IT professionals"

I think you have misunderstood. The problem is not the IT professionals, but apparent abuse of the ICT system by employers bringing people over and paying the IT worker from India less than the UK going rate. If true that would be abuse of the system, but by the employer not the worker.

The possible solution would be to pay the posted Indian IT worker the going rate, or employ a UK/EEA based worker at the going rate.

Intra Company Transfers should not be used to undercut UK workers, and they should not be used when there are UK/settled or EEA workers available to do the job.

I have also read many, many posts over the years about workers on ICT work permits not paying any income tax or national insurance in the UK. This may be allowed, but I am sure a great many Indians are taking advantage of reciprocal tax agreements in the UK than the other way round.

It will be interesting to see how this all pans out.

The original BBC File on 4 programme is available here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8077579.stm
BBC File on 4 wrote:British IT contractors have lost their jobs to non-EU workers because they were cheaper, the BBC has been told.

An ex contractor at BT's Global Services Unit, said IT contractors laid off recently by BT, were told workers brought from India to the UK cost less.

He claimed the overseas workers working in the UK, received about half the rate for the job he was paid.

ICT has been going on for a long time now. It is not a new thing which started affecting. The only difference it is making because:
1. Companies are making extremenly competitive offers. Especially after giants like Infy,TCS etc turned to UK due to US market slowdown.
2. Current market situation which is forcing many companies to revisit their costings.

But bringing people by ICT is one thing and keeping them is different as more and more people are swithing on Tier 1 ;-)

Anyway, lets see how it goes.
