Who can hire Tier 4 Students?

Post by Amrish » Mon Feb 01, 2010 10:23 pm

Hello Guys,
can some one tell me, what is the problem or the rules about this Tier 4 student visa, why all these students having problem getting work for 20 hours?

Why I am asking is, I am a physiotherapist for 14 years in US, I just came to UK to get Tier 2 work permit, I have HPC registration and yet I was not able to gain any interview calls,

Now I applied and offered Admission in masters of physiotherapy, so becoming Tier 4 student, will I face the same problem of getting work?
I have family and kids, that is why I want to find out as much as, before I commit to Tier 4 and get stuck without work.

I asked few medical recruitments agencies and they said they will not be able to hire me as Tier 4, and everybody is saying ONLY NHS can sponsor Tier 2 or Hire Tier 4,

so if all these companies and recruiters can not hire Tier 4, than WHO are allowed to employ student with 20 hours work limitation? who can give jobs to students?

That is all I want to find out.

Thanks in advance for any help.

In theory almost anyone can hire students on tier 4. However some employers find that the 20 hour limit makes it difficult and the prospect of "hiring a student" to do a professional job kind of underminds their employees and customers. I'm sure you are highly skilled but the "student" status can make you disadvantaged.

Most students on Tier 4 (long-term) are university students and they do the "typical" student jobs like waiter and bartender, typical low-skilled jobs. This doesnt mean you can't do highly-skilled jobs, it just means it unusual and albeit difficult to get one.

Most university students in UK graduate and then get a post-study-work visa which allows them to work withous restriction on a 2 year visa (non-renewable). Moving from PSW to Tier 2 is very easy.

For you, if you would like to live and work here in the long term, I suggest, you complete a masters degree which will enable you to apply for the PSW and once you earn a certain amount from an employer, you will become elligible for a Tier 1 highly skilled worker visa. This will allow you to work in any sector unrestricted.

Thanks Joh118, I do appreciate your reply so much. I want to make sure, if I will be able to work and earn decent money, while I study for 2 years, having family and kids,

Actually I had a interview for Tier 2 last week, they wanted to hire me too, but it was part time job for 15 hour only with 17 pound per hour, but they told me even paying me 20 pound per hour, will make only 300 pound a week and 1200/ month, with 14,400 per year, and I need to earn atleast 26,000 a year to be able to file for Tier 2 work permit, and now not been able to gain any more interviews, I applied and offered 2 masters course by 2 universities.

Thanks so much, I do really trying to understand this Tier 4 student and work thing.

No probs! happy to help. Do you already have Tier 4? If not you will have to go back home and apply again. You cannot go from visitor to student.

When you apply for Tier 4, as you have children and (husband?) or any dependents, you will have to prove that you can support them financially in the UK.

If you do have a husband, he will be able to work full-time in the UK in any sectors unrestricted.
