Real passports vs certified copies?

Post by buttercup88 » Fri Mar 12, 2010 10:32 am

When turning in the application for a spouse visa (in person), is it better to turn in your (and your partners) real passports?

Lots of people here are turning in certified copies; is there really any benefit to doing that?

It seems like a hassle.

buttercup88 do you mean a spouse visa (i.e. an application from outside the UK) or an application for leave to remain as a spouse (i.e. from inside the UK)?

IN the case of spouse visas, many people submit certified copies because they are not physically in the country where the application is being made, and you should not send your passport overseas in the post!

Also, without their own passport, the UK-based spouse could not travel themselves if they had submitted their own passport.

A certified copy should be perfectly adequate as proof of the UK spouse's settled status.

oh, ok.

i understand.

i was wondering.
my husband and i are both in the country where we will be making the application and we wont be travelling during the process.... so i guess we'll just give them our actual passports.

:)
thanks

For the spouse visa only the applicant must submit their passport...the sponsor should only submit photocopies of his/her passport with the applicant's application...preferably certified copies.

right.

would it still be okay if we both submitted both our passports for the spouse visa?

We have to submit the supporting documents in person so we'll bring just normal copies in case they want those instead.

the reason is that we live in the middle of nowhere right now so getting certified copies would be a real pain.
and
neither one of us is leaving the country until we go to the UK.

Are you submitting your documents at the British embassy or is it thru one of their visa application centers? If at the embassy, then it would be best to ask them during submission if its ok to submit the sponsor's passport as well or just copies.

I have read elsewhere here that a sponsor wanted to submit his passport too with his wife's application in Brazil but the embassy returned the passport immediately at the time of submission and only wanted the copies.

See if you can call up the embassy or reach their visa section via email.

Best of luck with your application :)

My question is what the point submitting orgional passport when it is not required.

Answer is very simple.

Original passport of applicant+certified copy of sponsors passport

Same applies to inside uk application.

In my case, it's simpler just to give the original.

I live in a small small town..... like
I'm using dial-up for internet (I'm not joking...fast speeds are rare around here).
We have to travel 5.5 hours by train to the embassy to hand all the paperwork in.

It would save us a lot of time and hassle just to turn both my and my sponsor's original passports in.

To be honest, I dont even know how we would go about getting a certified copy since we are both out of country.

I'm sure it will be no problem and if it is, I'll have regular copies on backup.

There is no harm in handing in original passport, but you will have problems, if the the Embassy or its staff misplace or loose your passport. Have you thought about the possibility of that happening and the consequences of that?.

ha ha...
if they lose my husband's passport, they (meaning the embassy) are going to be the ones replacing it as he's a UK citizen.

good point though.
