Knowledge of language and life in the UK

Post by MrDodge » Wed Mar 31, 2010 4:42 pm

Hi folks,

I've read that the Home Office will soon be requiring applicants for "settlement" to pass the "Knowledge of language and life in the UK" test.

I'm unsure about this, because the term "settlement" is often used to refer to INDEFINITE leave to remain, and yet those applying for temporary leave to remain from outside the UK, e.g. for 6 months as a fiance, fill in a form called "Settlement VAF4A". The same word seems to be used in 2 different contexts.

In other words, does someone outside the UK applying for a 6 month fiance visa now need to pass this extra test?

I should hope that the answer is no, because you need to actually get into the UK to sit the test in the first place, and also because its a complete nonsense for a 6 month visa. But as the boys at the Home Office have made things as clear as mud as usual, I feel uncertain enough to need to check!

thanks in advance for any replies,

Mr D.

Its being done now , and has been going on for a few years already

When your fiancee arrives, you have 6 months to get married and then apply for Further leave to Remain (2 yrs). Before the expiry of the 2yrs your wife will have to take and pass the test in order to be granted ILR. ( or in other words settlement)
