Does References help in getting the job?

Post by npanglia » Sat Apr 10, 2010 7:04 am

Hi
To what extent good references from local market(UK) can help in getting the jobs in the market?

When I Say references - I mean senior guys reference from top MNC"s with whom you would have worked in the past.

Not a pence
They rarely ask
When they do, it is a tick
They rarely check if they do ask

the reference would not affect the selection process...

i have come across ocassions when after they have decided to take a candidate, they'll check with someone who knows them just to make sure they dont have anything adverse to say about them...

Most never ask for references, the ones who do ask are usually the initial recruitment agents while they check your profiles and short list you.
The final employer itself does not bother about it. Even if they ask for it, as in some big govt organizations, it is more process related than actual background checks. And as the previous members have said, it does not add any weight to your application and hence has no bearing in the final candidate selection

Of course, if you have an MP recommending you, then I take my words back - though even they are not of high importance these days :-)
