On Tier 1, planning for name change in Passport

I am an Indian Nationa residing in UK.Started on HSMP but now currently on Tier 1 on renewal. Planning to shorten my name in Indian Passport.
Have advertised in India/UK newspapers and planning to go to HCI next week.
1)Is the procedure complex?
2)Will the HCI give the passport in 10 days time?
3)What will happen to my Tier 1 status although I will be issued a National ID card instead of VISA vignette.
4) Is there any disadvantage of National ID card over Visa vignette for foreign nationals.
Kindly answer these questions.
