Will obtaining a student Visa cancel my 5 years visitor visa

I have a 5 years visitor visa that is still valid till 2013. Applying now for a 1 year course in a UK uni and have received an offer to take to the embassy. Can you tell me if they are going to cancel my visitor visa, or can I keep two types of valid visas on my passport?
