How early can one apply for HSMP Extension

Guys,

My visa is expiring on 23rd of July 2010 , Can I apply for my HSMP extension visa into Teir 1 in May as I have full filled the criteria for extension or I have to wait untill 28 days prior to expiration of my visa

just to make you feel more comfortable I applied 2 and a half months before my hsmp expired so yeah go for it
