Coa waiting times and passport

Hi,

I have applied for COA since March 20/ 2010..and still waiting for the coa.

Does anyone knows:
1) Can i get my passport back w/o affecting the coa process for travelling?
2) How long will it take more for COA?

They havent yet contacted me nor asked for any further documents. I am here in valid tier1 visa and my fiancee is german..so it looks like a huge backlog!
