What's the normal base salary for a programmer with 5-yr experience in non-financial company, such as telecom software, in London?

You can find an average figure by keying in your core telecom skills in jobsites like jobserve, jobboardsit etc.
If you hit 200K pa, then its time to retire

You are kidding. I'd like to know how many programmers earn £50k+ in non-financial companies in London. Seems the pay in London is lower, and the expense is higher compared with New York. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Very likely. My research seems to bear that out too, although I haven't lived in the UK

Well, if you start contracting you can get around £300 a day, which works out to nearly 80K a year. I am talking about programming in a non-finance role with 5 years of experience. I've been doing this for a while and it's almost like a permanent job in all respects, but with double the pay!

There are very few jobs out here (permanent positions) which can pay you above 50.

From what i know, you can expect around 36 K ( assuming you are lucky to find one).

Finance positions do! Our new grads *start* on just under 40K.

Security and Audit type of job pays pretty well, around £50-60K based on my research. This is on par with US salary too (around US$ 100K).

Any specific reason for this inconsistency? isnt IT amongst the top paying professions in UK? I was not aware of the pay in the financial software related line untill recently, but was quite shocked to see the huge difference between non-finance software and finance related IT jobs. For instance, there is a big difference even between a niche domain such as telecomm/wireless/mobile - seems pretty frustrating :) Atleast in India, from where i come, this sector has among the best salaries to offer which leaves me in two minds now :D (kidding).

Go the managed or limited company route if you're contracting. I just moved from Umbrella Company to Managed Company and increased my Net by 50%.

Telecom / VoIP skills have very high demand. you should be earning in the range of £45-50k for permenant job or as another member said, £300 per day.

Hi,

I have only been able to get a offer for £ 34K with an experience of about 7 years in Telecom , It is hard to get more salaries in this part of world.

I believe US is more better in salary terms but again it has its own issues.

Cheers,
sjgul.

Hey guys,

I am just wondering: when you got the job, is the salary more or less the same as the one shown in the job adverts itself?

Lanwarrior,

When saying as per adverts, the ads shows the salary range to be very wide £ 35 - £50 K, but when it comes to pay out, Indian software professionals to start in UK are hired at the lowest ot this range and could be bargained easily. Sometimes, we are the best preferred as with quality experience and low cost, we are the most preffered.

I still don't understand the high difference between Financial and Non-Financial salaries, but I infer this conclusion:- if a non-Financial software engineer has to earn US salaries in UK , better is to move to the Financial domain as Teleco companies are not in any good condition to pay at that par , This is however in complete contrast to US where now a days USD 120K is becoming very common. However again, US has GrrenCard delays and a long process of Citizenship which is also very cosly as compared to UK Citizenship.

I believe the discussion is endless.

Cheers,
sjgul.

Well I believe thats not true, I have friends both in UK and US.

Ones in US Telecom and Networking getting well above USD 120K + and the figures daily increasing. Ones in UK struggling to get even £ 40K.

The simple reason is that IT Non-Financial companies are not too much as compared to US resulting in a heavy demand-supply ratio and putting much pressure on salaries.

I too have both firends in UK and US> It really depends on which company, experience, etc to define the salary. My friend is a manager in AT&T and they're paying the Java Developer about $80K.

Either way, can't beat US when it comes to IT job, especially in Silicon Valley
