Is there a minimum threshold for engagement ?

Post by gsingh » Mon Jun 07, 2010 4:14 pm

I am a UK Citizen and recently got Engaged to my fiance in March. This was an arranged as in normal in Indian culture. I am planning to get married by October this year and was wondering on a few questions

1) Do i have to be engaged for a minimum period ?
2) I am currently a contractor but i have savings over £7,000, i earn a decent wage but i had taken a few months out during which period i got engaged. I have 3 months payslips since returning back to work, will this suffice or do i have to be in employment for a longer period
3) I understand that a 2 bedroom is fit only for 3 persons under the overcrowding guidlines, however I live with my cousin who own a penthouse apartment that is over 1,000sq ft that could easily accomodate 4 persons, do i have to provide information from a council to state this ?

Would appreciate any feedback

Thanks,

G

1. no
2. 3 months is required so you should be fine.
3. so how many people are you going to be living with? The living room counts as a room. So it's 3 rooms in this case.
I tell it like it is.

- Will it not be a problem when I will have to present a work contract and since i am on a temporary contractor i won't have a permanent one ? I am not worried about future prospects for myself but would it help to send through a CV to suggest that this is just another way to be employed ?
- I am living with 1 couple, and I would be the 2nd couple so total 4, but presently we are 3.
- Is it ok to get a Registry marriage done and apply for the VISA so that formalities can be completed before the traditional marriage ? I am not sure if this would be a problem for applications from India ?

Thanks,

G

No there is no minimum period you are required to be married, you only need to have met to qualify.

Please see this requirement on http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply ... artners#Q1

The Savings seems alright, it will not be a factor, although they should show transaction over a period of time, as opposed to one go payment.

Please see the accommodation requirements. http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/ecg/mainte ... n#17693600

You could get the council to examine the accommodation, and provide documentation on whether or not it is suitable . But 2 bedrooms might be suitable, depending on the circumstance, such as the relationship of the people, ages, gender, etc.

Best wishes for the future.

Your traditional marriage will only be a ceremonial one in India and not formal and recognised by your country as you have already legally got married in the UK ( even though it was carried out in a Registry office)

Hi I got married recently in india and the rules there are slightly different.

Firstly you have to have the religious marraige done before you can have your marriage certificate issued by the local office/court. To get the certificte you have to provide various details such as wedding card, photos of the wedding and booking confrimation details of the temple also help.

The marriage cerificate will have to be done at the local office or court and both of you need to be there as they will need to take a picture of you both which will show on the certificate.

If however you are not religious you can get a registry marriage done but the process will be similar i.e the ceremony will need to take place in a function hall and the submitt pictures and receipts of the booking.

I wanted to do it this way around too but you then can not mention anything about your actual religious wedding as your certifiate will indicated you were not married in a temple as you are not religious. too much of a headache to be honest.

by the way this was in punjab. I can only assume it is the same in other parts of india
