Schengen Visa Question

Hi,

I've just recently got issued a 6 months Type C Multiple Entry Schengen Visa, but the duration of stay it says only 20 days?
What does that mean?
Is it that each time I enter the Schengen states I can only stay maximum of 20 days until the visa expires? Or is it I can only stay maximum 20 days within a 6 month period?
