Passport and visa for newborn

Post by docsimmi » Wed Mar 08, 2006 9:43 pm

Hallo,

I am currently on HSMP visa which is similar to a work permit. I am due to have my baby in Nov 2006 and currently hold an indian passport. What would be the procedure to apply for an indian passport and subsquently get the visa stamp?

any info appreciated

The website of the Indian High Commission in London should answer the first question, at least...

If you eventually get indefinite leave to remain, the baby will be eligible for registration as a British citizen by the Home Office search for Guide and Form MN1 on www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk. But this will. I believe, result in the child's losing Indian citizenship.

I am not yet eligible to apply for ILR, thats why I need to know the procedure for getting the baby's passport stamped with the British Visa.

Thanks

Docsimmi, congratulations on the pregnancy. As you no doubt appreciate, there are a number of steps :-
  • Register the birth with the local Births, Deaths and Marriages register here in the UK. That is a legal requirement in respect of all births in the UK. So your child with have a British-style birth certificate, but that does not mean he/she will instantly be British
  • Obtain an Indian passport for the child. And Indian-style birth certificate as well?
  • Apply for a visa for the child. You will use, I think, the FLR(O) form. The application fee will be £335 by post or £500 in person at a PEO.
  • After you have your ILR you can use form MN1 to obtain British Citizneship for your child.
I would give you a link to the form but even at this time of night, the IND website is not working.

Thanks John. That is very helpful. Will I have to apply for the FLR(O) form or the FLR(IED) form. As when I was applying for the extension on my leave to remain on the HSMP, I had filled up the FLR(IED). Are the two forms one and the same?

docsimmi,
option 2 for you: if you are visiting india after delivery, you can take your child on indian passport(without going for FLR(O) and get UK visa stamped from india and return back. Thats the information i receive from pakistan embassy for my child born in UK.
