Whoever told you that, was telling you a fib. Doesn't matter if you are from UK or Ireland or Korea or Poland or Mars or Venus (ok, maybe not Venus), the rules are the same for all. If you meet their requirements, you will be let in.
Instead of relying on people making up story, you may want to start at:
http://www.cic.gc.ca
That's the official, Canadian government immigration website. Lots of good information there.
If you are looking to go on a work permit, you need to first get a job and if hired, the employer would have to apply for permission to hire a foreign worker. This is based on shortage of employees for the type of job you are seeking.
If you are looking to move as immigrant (under skilled worker option), you need to have at least one year experience in one of the 29 job categories (information on the above website). Plus you would need to have at least 67 points (based on experience, education, language etc). Also, they only accept 1,000 applications a year in a any single job category (from the list of 29), so if you are interested, apply as soon as possible in the new fiscal year.
For immigration, there are other categories that you may apply for as well (besides skilled worker, as outlined above). For example, Entrepreneurs and business people may apply for business visa. Their requirements are different. You may also want to look for provincial nomination programme, which some of the provinces have.
There are lots of options. Read the CIC website (which may take sometime to do), but lots of good information and options available.
