Spouse visa date of entry and point of entry

Dear all!
Thanks to all the wonderful advice I received from this forum over the past year, my wife was successful in applying for her UK spouse visa. Thanks to everyone whose posts I read and all the helpful replies!

All that remains are two questions: first, we put 1st December down as our entry date, but since the application it looks like we will be entering later, probably on the 21st December. Does anyone know the time limit for entry to activate the visa - is it one week, two weeks, a year, etc..?

Also, does my wife need to travel direct from her home country to the UK or can she have an extended layover abroad first, and then enter from that country?
