I am planning to apply for Tier 1 visa in the coming days. Initially, I had planned to apply mid next year but because of the freeze on Tier 1 I am applying right now.
My wife is currently in US and won't be coming back till Feb next year. I have around 3500 GBP in the last three months in my account. However, browsing through border agency's website, it seems like if my wife will join me before 12 months, I need to show 2800 + 1600 GBP.
Just to clarify, I am not applying for a dependent Tier 1 migrant along side my Tier 1 application. In this case, is the fund requirement 2800 GBP or 4200 GBP?
Thanks in advance

Even if she joins you before 12 months and as of date you are applying alone, you need to show 2800 GBP for yourself.
If she joins you before 12 months and if you are in UK, then you have to show 800(yourself) +1600(spouse) GBP = 2400 GBP as the maintenance funds held by you.
If she applies while you are still outside UK, the you need to show 2800 (yourself) + 1600 (spouse) = 4400 GBP.
I guess you incorrectly added 2800+1600 to arrive at 4200 GBP. Careful buddy!!
Thanks,
Sumit.

Thanks sumit for the reply. I guess I did up incorrectly

Should I mention my situation in the "additional information" section Part 7 of form as to why my wife isnt travelling and that when she applies I will provide all the supporting documents + the maintenance fund requirement?

This is the reply I received from VFS
Thank you for contacting VFS UK Visa Helpdesk.
With regards to your query, please find the maintenance of funds for Tier 1:
You must be able to demonstrate that you have funds to support yourself and any dependants. For the main applicant this is £2,800 with a further £1,600 needed for each dependant accompanying you or planning to join you within 12 months of your arrival in the UK. These amounts must be held in your personal bank account for a minimum period of 3 months, for which you must show bank statements/other evidence immediately preceding and dated no more than 1 month prior to the date you submit your application. The balance should not fall below the required minimum at any time during the 3 month period. See also the Maintenance part of the question below telling you what documents you will need to include with your application
Please do let us know if we can be of any further assistance.
This again seems to suggest that i would need 2800 + 1600 GBP to file even though I am not applying for my wife's dependent visa at this time

@Kooladi
what neosumit said is correct. I was in the same situation and showed only 2800 GBP in funds.
You need 2800 GBP, thats it.

@desperado1306: did you provide a date on which your wife would be joining you? Is it necessary that I show a date which is 12 months after i arrive in UK

No. You select "No" in "Is your dependant accompanying you or would join later" for now and go ahead with your application.

Are you serious? Won't it ring some alarm bells as to why my partner is not travelling with me?

When you apply for your wife, that time depending on whether you are in UK or in India, you would need to show 1600 GBP for her and 2800 or 800 GBP for yourself.
Filling the application form does not mean that you are committing that your spouse won't join you in the UK within 1 year.
At the time of her application, bank statements need to be provided again to prove that you hold sufficient amount for yourself and her as well.
Thanks,
Sumit.
