Irish citizenship by descent application process.

Post by moireach » Wed May 31, 2006 6:15 pm

Hi all,

I'm a US citizen about to apply for Irish citizenship by descent, through my grandparents. I've got the application and paperwork ready to go -- the next step is to make an appointment at the Irish consulate (in Boston) to bring it in. I was wondering if anyone who's been through this process could tell me what to expect at the appointment? Or give me advice on where else to find or ask this info? My googling is coming up pretty empty.

Thanks so much.

I made my application last year at the Irish embassy in Beijing. The process is probably similar in the US except that many more applications are made there.

The consul looked through my original documents and kept the photocopies that I'd brought. She took a copy of my (British) passport and rather apologetically asked for the application fee. No awkward questions, just a friendly chat. Nothing to worry about, just go in and do it!

I was told it usually took about a month to process the application, but the consul called me four days later to say my registration certificate was ready for collection. It took about 5 more weeks before I got a passport.
