Overseas earnings

Post by mulderpf » Wed Jan 05, 2011 6:07 pm

I just got my Tier 1 (General) visa today and I let my employer know.

My company has an office in Cyprus as a base for European business as well as a few clients in the UK. Based on the company expanding more in Europe and possible new clients in the UK, my company is looking into employing me in London (working on-site at a client to start off with) and then see from there.

As my company only has offices in South Africa and Cyprus, I am wondering what the implications would be. I have made it clear that I need to earn a certain amount etc in order remain in the UK, so they are aware of that. What bothers me though is tax and National Insurance in the UK and the potential effect it might have on my application.

As they don't have an office in the UK, I would assume it would be difficult for me to directly be employed with them. I was thinking about the contracting route and then just invoicing them each month and pay the taxes etc myself (maybe even using an umbrella company).

I need some help, suggestions and advice about this...will it be more of a mission than what it's worth? At least I'll have an income from the moment I get to the UK, so it's a big plus in my books.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!!!

Hi,

I am no expert in this area. There are routes like sole trader, forming a limited company. Of course it involves more effort but you might get some tax savings etc. Need to do more research :)
