Schengen visa for spouse of Irish passport holder

Post by WJW » Mon Apr 11, 2011 10:46 am

We stay in Northern Ireland.
I travel with a South African passport with a residence card of a family member of an EEA member.
My wife has both an UK and Irish passport and we would like to visit friends in Spain on short notice.
We have been to Italy, Switzerland and Spain previously each time with me applying for a Schengen Visa in my own right.
Is it however possible for me to travel without a Schengen visa if we travel together and she uses her Irish passport?

... and you have your residence card, then, in principle at least, yes. Actually, it is not relevant what passport your spouse uses as long as it is a EEA/Swiss one though practically speaking the Irish one may make it smoother. Problems you may still face: airline check-in as well as Spanish immigration officer.

Speaking of the airlines: their database should give them the right answer.

And I will have to brush-up on my Spanish to read it to him! Hahaha

Correction: the British passport might make it easier (but either should be fine).
