Moving to holland

Post by reason » Wed Jul 19, 2006 2:09 pm

Hi, sorry if im repeating old questions.

Im 20 living in manchester uk and want to move to rotterdam/ Barendrecht.

I just want to leave the uk behind - so i want to go to start a fresh and work and live as i do here.

I have no idea what to do first and what to do next.

Im sure its not as simple as get a passport and fly over.

I have no idea about housing - jobs - relevent documentation

any information will be greatly appriciated.

If was 20 again I'd just go and wing it, live and learn from my mistakes. I feel your biggest hurdle would be Dutch Language, but even that wouldn't take long once your immersed. Tons easier language than Russian.......

Go for it before you get tied down with a mortgage and kids..

As you live in Manchester I assume you are British? If that is the case and the passport you would obtain is indeed a British passport you have treaty rights. That is you can live and work in any other EEA country (and Switzerland) ... and that of course includes the Netherlands. So it really is that simple. Having arrived you will need to register for the equivalent of a National Insurance and for income tax ... it is as simple as that. But Wanderer is quite right to point out the language situation.

Or on a heatwave day like today you fancy Iceland or Norway?

If you are not British then ignore the above and say what nationality you are.

Hey, I am from Preston, UK and I am in exactly the same situation as you. I dont know where to start with anything. I know what to do once I get there (sort of) but I dont know how I go about getting a place to live and a job which are the two most essential things. I dont particularly want to "wing it" in a country I have never been to before. I have no intention of comin back to the UK either :? . Anyways maybe we can have a chat about it sometime :) Good to know someone is the same position and has the same worries and naivety about this kinda thing.
