I just recently met my Dad who is a British Citizen. I was born in the Philippines on September, 1987. My Dad doesn't know anything about me until October of 2009, we had a DNA test to prove that he really is my Dad and the result was positive. Last year (2010) I was granted a visa to visit him for the first time for 6 months.
I would like to know how I can acquire a British Citizenship. Based on the documents I read about the matter I assumed that I can't become an automatic British Citizen by decent even though my Dad is a British Citizen and he acknowledged that I'm really his daughter because I was born between the period of 1983 to 2006 and my parents are not married.
Here's the portion of the information I was basing my assumption with and the link:
Is there any way for me to be granted British Citizenship? Did I understood the quoted link correctly? Or can my Dad and I still do something about it for me to be granted to stay in the UK indefinitely?Whether or not you are a British citizen depends on the type of citizenship your parents had. This may be British citizenship by descent or otherwise than by descent.
British citizenship may descend to one generation born abroad. So if you were born outside the United Kingdom or qualifying territory and one of your parents was a British citizen otherwise than by descent, you are a British citizen by descent. If you were born before 1 July 2006 you may not qualify if your parents were not married at the time of your birth.
