self-employed but not earning enough to pay tax

Post by selami » Thu Nov 03, 2011 2:35 pm

I am applying for citizenship and meet all the criteria, but I am worried that my self-employed status will cause problems. I have worked here without breaks until employer went into bankrupcy. I couldn't secure new job and set up own business (soletrader). I pay my NI contributions, but for the past 2 years I earned under the limit to pay taxes. Is this going to be a problem? As my accountant has submitted my self assessments to the HMRC and I pay NI contributions in time. This year so far business is doing better, so should I submit bank statements with the application to show improvement?

No. There is no requirement for the applicant to be earning a specified amount of money. As long as you have complied with HMRC rules with regards to your self-employment activities, you'll be fine.
Life isn't fair, but you can be!
