US citizen to marry uk citizen carer of a disabled daughter

I am a uk citizen I have a severly disabled child (who has a short life expectancy) with a US citizen. We are engaged and he would like to come live in england with us and to support me and help care for our daughter. I am unable to work as I'm a full time carer for our daughter so all my money comes from carers allowance, DLA, tax credits and housing benefits.
How do we get the marrage visa if all my funds are public? My fiancee really wants to be here to spend time with his daughter. He is currently back in the US as his 6 months visitor visa ran out.

You are British and therefore entitled to claim all the benefits that you mention.

However there is still the matter of needing to pass the financial test, to show that your fiancé/husband will not need to claim Public Funds, as defined.

How much savings do the two of you have? Also, if the fiancé visa is granted, then the two of you marry, then he applies for and gets a spouse visa, what sort of job would he get? Does he have any particular skills?

We don't have alot in savings probably around 7,000 between us. What is a good amount?


He works in construction but was also training to be a fire fighter. I have a b sc degree so I would consider going back to work while he acts as our daughters carer insted.

Well certainly those savings will help.

Taking on board that on a fiancé visa he is not allowed to work, and even though the plan might change later, I think this is the way to go when the visa application is made. That is, say that as soon as he is in the UK you will seek work, and give some details of the sort of work you would hope to get, and how much you might hope to earn.

Once the two of you have married, and then his fiancé visa has been converted into a spouse visa, he will be allowed to work, so then the plan might change. Or maybe it will not, given the state of the construction industry at the moment.
