In Person Visa Application

Has anyone done an in-person visa application in NY? I been approved for the HSMP and submitted my visa app online and I don't want to take the chance of having my passport and other things lost in the mail. Is the interview process long? Did you get the visa the same day? Will they accept credit cards in person? Please give me some ideas if you've been through the process.
