Date of extension of visa

Hi,

I have query regarding the date of extension .I have the visa which will expire in July 2012.I am filing my visa in march 2012.I want to know date which is considered for visa extension.
1)Is it the date on which approval is made
2)Is it the date after the expiry of visa(In my case, will the date of extension be from July 2012 to July 2015)

Please clarify.
