Referee Question

Post by darksun » Thu Mar 29, 2012 4:13 pm

Hey All,

I am arranging my referees. I have potentially someone as a deputy of a department. A company I used to work. Would that fit into manager of VAT registered company or manager of LTD company?

Thanks in advance..

PS: Or a supervisor will be ok like a manger too?

I am always surprised that "Manager of a VAT registered company" is listed, even Directors shouldnt be on there in my opinion given that with no vetting and only about £35 you can set up a company and register it for VAT.

That said, it is there and so in theory the Deputy Head of a department should be acceptable but you could always double check with UKBA

I called Home Office and they said no.
This professional referee thing is tricky...

How about someone working in investment banking as bak/building society official?

If they work in an investment bank then they are probably ok. If they work in a broker or such within investment banking then probably not.

Presumably you have exhausted the obvious ones such as your GP or your Dentist?

Thanks friendinneed.

He's working at Goldman Sachs. That should be ok?

Well, to be honest I know my dentist for only 1.5 years and GP sadly, I wasn't registered for a long time. But it's quite common they don't wanna sign :/

It doesn't matter that he works for GS or his title. What is important is if his profession is listed in the approved professional list or not.

What does he do in GS?

Thanks for your reply!
My friend is an Executive Director there. When i've asked him what h does exactly is called strategist. Will that fall into bank official category?

Thanks a lot...

Hey Jambo,

Why do you think so? I'll call UKBA today in anycase. I've thought it might be ok for director of vat registered company or LTD company.

or

Bank official. Since he's registered with FSA.

Hey Jambo and friendinneed, just another thing to mention the referee is registered with FSA and working at the invesment banking. Does it make him fall into bank official category?

Thanks Jambo.

1 more question. I have a friend who has a Ltd company. He knows me for 7 years but he's in uk for the last 1 year or so and he's currently director of his Ltd company. Will that do it for the referee?

Thanks a lot!

Hey manyonisland,

I've called Home Office, they said it's fine. The only thing is I didn't ask the thing Jambo mentioned before which is it's a very small Ltd company, I don't think he has any employees apart from himself and his wife. But it's a legal, legitimate Ltd company so it should be fine...

Thanks a lot for this ... I have many friends who do contracting and have their own company.. by the sound of it, it looks like any of those who owns the private limited company falls under eligible category.

It only states they cannot be a partner, live with you or family (blood or marriage).

Friends, colleagues, people providing a professional service to you etc are all fine.
