British Passport Application for baby born to EEA nationals

Hi guys,

me and my husband have been legally living and working in UK since 2004. In March 2010 we both have obtained blue 6 paged cards called UKK residence documentation for a national of eea state confirming our residency status as we have been exercising our treaty rights for a continuous period of 5 years.

In October 2010 we got married here in UK and our son is expected to be born at the end of May/beginning of June this year.

I will be applying for a British passport for him and would like to know if I need to apply for citizenship status certificate for the child first via UKBA before submitting a form to Identity Passport Service IPA - another words do I need to register him as a british citizen first using form MN1?

My impression is since our residency status has been confirmed by obtaining a residency card - permanent residency all I need to do is apply directly to IPS for a passport and presumably supply the confirmation cards as supporting documents? The cards were issued long before the baby will be here.

If this is not the case, can you pls someone guide me through the process of applying the british passport for a baby born to eea nationals?

Assuming the child is born in the UK, there is no need for registration. The child will be British from birth.

Apply directly to IPS providing one parent passport, the blue PR card and the child UK birth certificate.

thanks. Would you suggest applying providing only my husband name? This is because my PR card has been issued under my maiden name and since then my passport has been changed and issued again new one under my married name. Would this cause any problems? I could provide marriage certificate if needs be. Or is it easier and more importantly - is it enough if only father applies for the babys passport?

Only father's passport is fine.

Using only your passport is also fine. The UK birth certificate also includes the mother's maiden name so that could be used to show the link between the names. It is a very common case so should not cause any issue. You can attach a cover letter explaining it if you wish.

Using only your passport is also fine. The UK birth certificate also includes the mother's maiden name so that could be used to show the link between the names. It is a very common case so should not cause any issue. You can attach a cover letter explaining it if you wish.

you can send covering letter explaining why child is british, it will make on harm and may make it quicker. This what I used to do while applying for my kids passports.and they quick daughters one was with me in 5 working days, my boy one take longer because there was some issues with countersignee, he did't provide his passport number. But compare to my embassy they a lot quicker.

I am just wondering about the pictures for the baby - was it too difficult to take one? I mean they are babies like few weeks old, so I presume it will not be the easiest job to photograph them! Did you supply passport sized photos together with the application? How old were your kids when you applied? I am thinking to apply as soon as he is born.

yes I did send passport size pictures, kids were couple weeks old when the pictures been done. Go to snappy snaps if you have one arround, they pretty good in taking babys pictures.and there is some exceptions for babys pictures any way, check them in the guide or on ips website, they know that it is not easy to take infant picture.

just want to add to the information you needed. about applying for a british passport for your baby.
since you and yr husband are EU citizen and has been living and working in the uk for over 5yrs, i can tell you that yr child is automatically a british citizen. here is my situation: my partner is an EU citizen(FINLAND) and has been living and working in the uk for 13yrs, she has no confirmation paper since she has been in the uk, she only use and have her EU ID-CARD and PASSPORT. as a non-EU citizen, i obtained my RC last year MAY - as unmarried partner, we had our baby girl NOV, and applied for her british passport in JAN. All we did was to ring the passport office and ask. we were told that since i dont have a PR or ILR yet, the child can only qualify thru the mother. the mother jst need to submitt original copies of her P60 for the period of 5yrs to date, to show she has been working and is still in the UK, together with her EU passport/ID CARD, the child UK full birthcertificate(which shows both our names as parents) and completed UK passport application form.
WE did jst as was told, used the postoffice check service, the following week our baby BRITISH PASSPORT arrived.
so u can just ring them , if in doubt, which am sure it will be easy for you to apply.
as for the passport foto, u can take yr baby to the passport studio, they have the standard sizes for UK PASSPORT, so u dont have to worry abt it.. they will do the foto take.

many thanks for your reply, I am planning to apply in person and make an app in londons office after the little one is born, not sure if this will be possible, i am a bit apprehensive to send passports and valuable documents in post to them so i would rather do it this way.

and yes, i will take him to studio to make pics, not sure if this can be done in their office in london so i will probably visit one of the studios we have in town before making a journey.

i dont think i will need to supply my p60 forms as i have OR card already which has been issued based on providing p60 forms then. So it looks like it is either PRcard that its needed to provide or other form of proof that mother or father were working legally in UK for continuous period of 5 years (by providing p60 forms).

did you get all documents (including p60 forms) checked at post office? i thought that IPS need to see p60 for themselves as originals when considering application?

yes post office checked all tho.
but u will still need to send all d original docs to passport office, they need to see it themself, and they will return all docs together with passports in secured sign for mail.
i dont knw if u can apply in person for yr child tho, but u can still ring them to confirm..
we just filled the form, post office check it and we put the original docs as they requested and it all came bck fine.
use secure postage from post office if u are sending your documents.

Send PR card, passport - thats enough, don't need to send p60 with it.
You can use check and send but in my case it did't work.
They offered it to me, when accepted they start checking documents and said to me that my child is not eglible for British passport because non of parents is British, so I sended it special delivery without paying for check and send.
If using special delivery documents should be fine, and if you pay another £3 on top of the passport fee they will return your passport by courier, so it will be ok.
Traveling to passport office is just wasting the time, but thats your choice.
