First Schgengen Visa - Single Entry only???

My husband (Indonesian) and I (Irish) are travelling to Germany next week so my husband applied for a Schengen Visa at the German Embassy in Dublin 2 weeks ago, and requested a "Multiple Entry" visa as we wish to return to Europe early next year. As Germany is our first (main) destination we applied to the German Embassy.

He went to pick up his visa today and was only issued with a Single Entry visa, valid for only 4 days (as per our Flight tickets)!! When he queried this, they said that they knew he applied for a multiple entry, but would only issue a Single Entry and he should apply for a new visa if he wishes to do a 2nd trip. This isn't much of an explaination, but before I call them to complain, does anyone know if this is standard process? Perhaps as this is his first Schengen visa, they will only issue a Single Entry?

It's quite frustrating as we had all the required documentation and it will require a complete new visa application with another embassy when we wish to do our second trip!

Welcome to the tough world of Schengen visas!!

The first visa is always the toughest to obtain unfortunately.

They will issue a Multiple visit visa if you have concrete plans for another trip like hotel bookings etc.

Of course they should have told you this at the beginning itself instead of taking the application and then not issuing a Multiple entry!!

Interesting, but absolute maddness! There is nothing about what is required for "multiple entry" visas on their info page http://www.dublin.diplo.de/Vertretung/d ... =Daten.pdf
And all the EU documentation about multiple entries simply say you have to apply for the "Schengen Visa" at your Main destination (or first if you have no main).

So if we had submitted information about flights and accommodation etc we could have gotten a multiple entry? Would that have been a simple "6 month multiple entry" or would they have issued the 2nd entry for those exact entry dates?

At this rate his passport is going to be full within a year or two if each weekend trip to a European city requires a new visa application and visa sticker!!!

My wife is in the same situation - we have to drive over 125 miles to give the documnents in person to the relevant embassy for a 4 day trip for a wedding in Denmark.

They will only give a 4 day visa.

After about a year I expect that my wifes passport will be full

Scrudu-Sometimes they will give a multiple entry for the exact dates!!

However what is important is that he should should use this visa by travelling once.

Then maybe the second visa will be easier and a for a longer period.

Best is to try for a Business visa if his travel is work related. These are a bit easier to get than a Tourist visa.

I think the Schengen countries enjoy acting tough because Britain is not a part of them as yet.

It is most unfortunate that Britain, and Ireland are not part of schengen because if they were then holders of residence permits issued by Britain, and Ireland would be enough for short stay entries and not have to apply for any schengen visas.

Also, you would think the EU is mature enough to say, seeing that youre an EU country we will recognise your residence permits for the purpose of travelling without the requirement to obtain a visa, something which Switzerland has been doing for years!

Thanks for the info Raina. Fingers crossed the 2nd application will result in a more favourable outcome, as applying for Schengen visa applications do take a bit of preparation time and all seem to involve presenting yourself to the Embassy which results in time off work

Its not really a free visa, if travel/work/time costs are added up.

It would be so much simpler if EU member states would just accept ONE stamp in the spouses passport proving that they are an EU citizens spouse. This running backwards and forwards is a joke - and the opposite of the spirit of the directive.
