See the new announcement, showing that the new Asylum and Immigration Bill has received Royal Assent as of July 22:
http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/ind/en ... ystem.html
Note that one of the provisions is:
Allowing the introduction of charging for non-asylum applications over and above the cost of processing to raise income from those who gain benefits from coming to the UK.
This is what Tnavnon and others had been talking about a while back. Does it mean they will raise fees as early as August 1st? What applications will go up the most and when?

I wonder how "gain benefits from coming to the UK" will be defined for those on visas that permit employment. Will it mean financial gain, comparing the salary earned in the UK vs. that in the home country, possibility of career enhancement....this is so subjective.

IMHO the fees likley to go up 1st as well as by the largest increment are those related to employment - expect the HSMP, WP and associated streams to get a major hit. My sources tell me it will be circa 500 GBP just for the IED bit and about 400 GBP for the FLR stream. I expect the fees to be on around the time of the pre-budget i.e. November 2004. This will most likley tie in with new regulations pursuant to the latest immigration bill which received its assent yesterday.
As per Chess's sign of immigration is getting 'priceless' and is a perfect revenue stream for the government - you got to give it to them..now if only there were quality standards accompanying these fees

Higher income tax and NI contributions on immigrants would have been popular but cost of administering these would be too great to bear.
Fees for permits/HSMP will definately go up big time, most likely for ILR as well. I doubt however that fees would be greater than £1,000. Come to think of it - anyone on half a decent salary of £30k+ should be able to save that much in one month, given that many come from countries where £1000 is enough to live well very long time it still appears to be a very good deal for those who want to come to Britain.

I remember when I was doing my 'O' level commerce/"economics", we had something called a 'supply and Demand' curvey....
..when a commodity is in high demand - you raise the price...and hope people keep coming back to buy the goods
Migration has occured for centuries - and it will continue at whatever price

Where there is a will there is a way.

My understanding is that there will be some refund of the fee when an application is refused.

I called the IND hotline and they told me the increases will be "under review" over the next year and probably not implemented until calendar year 05. I wouldn't count on it taking that long; she may not be that informed. If you are thinking about filing an application, why not do it next week?

Fortunately it looks like the person I talked with at IND the week before was right. August 1 has come and gone with no increases.
She said fees will probably not go up until about November, or maybe even early next year. But they will go up for sure.
