Here is my take on renewal

1. It is better (easier) to renew it in UK than in India. Unless of course, you know someone really well connected back in India, in which case, you can get stuff done without any hassle
2. If your passport is typed (i.e name etc on the first and last page is typed), you can get it renewed the same day ( The argument is that if it is typed, then they have computer records, so they do not have to get approval from the last issuing authority). If it is handwritten ( as mine was), then the info is not on any database, so they have to send a letter to the last issuing authotiy, and that can take months.
3. Its best not to try to change the address in the Passport unless there is a compelling reason to do so. If you dont ask for any change of address, there is no check. Why twist the bureaucracy by its tail, when you dont need to. In any event, the concept of 'permanent' address (whether in India or in UK) is meaningless for the peripatetic amongst us.
4. While the process is smooth in most cases, if it gets stuck, it takes time to unblock. So dont wait till the last minute. Do it early.

This is based on renewal experience for 3 of us in the UK ( London)

Hi Punjab,
Can you please post the link to your post about renewing passport. Sorry, I couldn't find it.
Even my passport is expiring soon. Have to get it renewed.

Thank you.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what documents should I take for renewal of Indian Passport.
I got ILR recently. I did not still apply for British Nationality. My Indian passport expires in Oct 2012. So, can anyone please say what documents are required?

In the hciLondin website, they gave links to Affidavit and Consent Letter as well. Do I need these?

Thanks in advance.

no you don't

i have PR and the documents which they asked from me were

1) Photocopies of the current passport ( front and back)
2) Photocopies of the current visa ( in my case PR)
3) Proof of address in India ( So I gave them Photocopies of my collage's ID, Indian driving license,Voter card, passport copies of my parents, rashan card with my name on it
4) original and Photocopies of birth certificate
5) original and Photocopies of marriage certificate

Hi Punjab,
Why do they need proof of address in India?
I am not changing my address. It is still the same as in my old passport.

hiya when i sent my application form i wrote my UK address to them but they sent back my papers asking me to submit proof of permanent address in India. so i had to collect every single document and sent them again. instead of permanent address of the UK they have mentioned my Indian address
