When does the residential qualifying period start?

The residential qualifying period is calculated from the day when we receive your application. Most unsuccessful applications fail because the applicant was not present in the UK at the beginning of the residential qualifying period.
You must make sure you meet this requirement before you make your application. For example, if we receive your application on 25 March 2010, you must show that you were in the UK on 26 March 2005.



For example,

Consider my visa start date is 4th Sep 2010 and i enterted UK on 17th Sep 2010.

Now after 2 years, i will apply for visa extension and after successful stamping / BPR starts on 4th Sep 2012 and will be valid untill 4th Sep 2015.


Since i was in UK only on 17 Sep 2010 (after 14 days of my actual visa start date), when can i apply for ILR ? The above example looks like as though i should be in the UK right exactly on the same date of my initial visa starts.

Incase if i have to apply for ILR, then should i go for another extension (since my visa expires on 4th September 2015), get visa and then stay for couple of more weeks (to make sure i have lived until 17th September 2015 on a valid visa) and then apply for ILR after 17th September 2015 as stated in the example from UKBA website ??

You certainly do appear to have confused the requirements for ILR with those for Naturalisation. Which is it that you want to apply for? Note you cannot apply for naturalisation if you are currently subject to immigration control in the UK. I.e. you will need to obtain ILR before you can apply for British Citizenship.
