when does 8 months start?

Sorry this might sound a stupid question but please see if anybody can clarify my doubt.

I am claiming points for 8 out of 12 months. Does the beginning of 12 months start from 12 months prior to expiry date on the visa stamp or the day the application was infact sent?

For example: say my visa expiry date is 12 th of September 2007..going 12 months back, it will be 12th Oct 2006. Can I claim salary for the period 1st October to may 2007 (first 8 month period). For some reason, I am forced to claim the initial 8 month period.

Forgot to add what exactly the application form says:

"You can claim points for previous earnings form work over a period of 8 months out of 12 month period directly preceeding the date of your application"

...and we can apply upto 5 weeks before visa expiry
