Swiss Tourist Visa

Post by Josh246 » Thu Jan 25, 2007 8:16 pm

We are planning a trip to Switzerland next month and have a query regarding the need for a visa or not.

We both live in the UK, I am Australian but my wife has a Sri Lankan passport, although we both have UK Residence Permits (Work Permit)valid till the 31st August 2007. We have been in the UK for the last 12 months.

I realise I do not need a visa, but am trying to find out whether my wife requires one.

I have tried to read as much as i could find on these boards and realise the with the Residence Permit we have it should be ok, but i have also read about a 6 month minimum time frame.

Does this mean we need at least 6 months remaining on the permit by the time in Switzerland or does it mean that any residence permit issued for 6 months or more in total is fine regardless of the time remaining.

It is the latter. The UK residence permit must be valid for more than 6 months.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

Ok let me get this straight...

So even though my wife has less than six months left on her residence permit (abased on a work permit) she does not require a visa for switzerland

Correct???

That is how I read the requirement - that the leave to enter the United Kingdom was granted for more than six months.

You could check with the Swiss embassy in London - and it might be wise to get the information from them in writing, depending on who you're flying with, since you don't want to be denied boarding by a check-in clerk who is unaware of this regulation (which is rather unusual, it must be said, although not unique).

You can send the swiss embassy copies of the important pages of the passport and they can send you back a letter of confirmation saying that you do not require a visa. Call them first...
