Urgent !!! Tier 1 Psw to Tier 4 Student Visa

I am presently on Psw visa which expires on Dec 09, 2012. I am planning to switch to Tier 4 student Visa and the course starts on Jan 7, 2013. Somewhere I heard that you need to have no more than 28 days between your visa expiry and start of the course, Please help me with this.. Can I apply for new visa
