Mark Carney to "apply for citizenship"

Born in Canada, the 47-year-old intends to bring his British wife and four children to the UK and apply for citizenship.

He clearly has not recently "lived legally in the UK for three years".

Are the other possible routes through which he could immediately apply for citizenship once resident in the UK?

Does the government have the discretion to wave the normal residence requirements?

The article did not state whether Mark Carney would apply immediately for British Citizenship. It still remains to be known whether he intends to apply after living lawfully in the UK for three years.

I guess my questions is whether there are legal options for him to apply earlier than that should he choose.

It is possible for the Secretary of State to waive the residential requirements although I think the statement he made was just a generic intention and not a declaration that he is filling an application form tomorrow.
