Does whether an application for settlement is approved or refused have any bearing on the documents returned? do they return all the same in either circumstance? Do they always return your evidence of relationship such as skype conversation logs etc?

They returned everything for my application.

I just wish I could have answered that

for the appeal, we haven't sent any original documents. So all documents are still with us.

If they decide to overturn the decision, they will only request the passport for stamping.

I'm sure there'd be someone else with a successful application who can respond to this?

I was to the understand that when you present your documents you must photo copy them so the photo copy can be kept and you get the original returned at the place of submission.
They will not return your documents as they are photo copies.

This also will depend on which country etc.
