How to get married?

Post by eu_national » Thu Jan 24, 2013 11:39 pm

I have been with my Pakistani boyfriend for over 5 years. We have a son together, but we don`t stay together in one household. He`s been in the UK since 2004 and overstayed his student visa for over 6 years. We now want to get married, start living together and sort out his legal situation. I wonder how an eu national can marry an illegal immigrant? It may be a silly question but I really can`t imagine how on earth we can marry in registry office? just to go there and book a ceremony? do they ask any questions? my boyfriend has a passport with student visa in it. Don`t want to be accused of a sham marriage or reported to home office. Can you tell me what do they ask for in registry office?

refer to the below link for a starter (not exactly but quite similar to your case)

thanks for your prompt reply, my boyfriend entered uk legally, but overstayed, at the moment what I need to know is how to proceed with marriage, I will worry about his immigration status after that. First want to know how this marriage process looks in the registry office. Anyone?

They will definitely want to see and verify the papers from you both. Without proper documentation, you will not be able to marry. Your boyfriend needs to sort out his status in the UK in order to marry, not marry to sort out his status. In any case, I must agree with Ted, this does smell fishy on a number of levels.

Well that is enough. I will have no hesitation in banning you and closing this thread if this behaviour persist.

Difficult to call a marriage where there is a child, a marriage of convenience.

This warning does not just apply to Ted, but all subsequent posters.

I have moved some of the not-so-relevant topics elsewhere, the OP has a question; if one can answer, please do. Casting dispersions will not be tolerated. Thanks.
