I will highly recommend you to open joint bank account (Lloyds TSB is the best option), they will not just open bank account but will give you letters, statement printout etc (non of the others bank do).... once account open they will give you sort code and account number there and than so you both can transfer funds and get the statement and letters of them.

if you want to go through notary than I will recommend you to use proper solicitor firm instead of notary (solicitor will be expensive but worth spending money when you need to get something like this done)

We went to notary public for same kind of thing, but he told us that he cannot do this. Notary is only for those documents which are used for abroad.
So the only option will be solicitor's attestation and his/her letter.

If somebody want to open joint account, keep in mind if their visa is less than 6 months, most of the banks would not open their account. So do not show them your passports unnecessarily. If they insist on it and you do not get open your account then go to HSBC. They must be helpful to you.

Yes agreed bank are pain sometime but i had very good experience with lloyds and find them very helpful with everything ... statement printout, stamps letters etc and even open bank account by showing driving licence and my current bank account card and that's it didn't ask about passport or anything
