Hello. I'm a 54 year old Australian woman, married to a 63 year old UK/Australian citizen. My husband emigrated to Australia when he was 40 and has retained his British passport.
We are planning to move to Liverpool (his place of birth) in a couple of years as self funded retirees. We meet the financial requirements for my husband to sponser me for a spouse visa. However, as 3 of my grandparents were born in the UK (one in England, 2 in Scotland) I believe I may be eligible to apply in my own right for an ancestry visa. The latter is a more attractive option to me, as the fees are far less and such a visa provides 5 years leave to remain, after which I could apply for ILR.
My question, which I hope someone will be kind enough to answer if possible, is regarding the work related requirement for an ancestry visa. I won't need to, and don't intend to, look for paid employment in the UK, however I would very much like to do voluntary work in the community services area. My current (paid) job is in this area, working for local government and managing a variety of work teams in areas such as disability, youth, seniors, children, community safety and community development. I'd love to be able to contribute to my new country is this way, in a voluntary capacity.
Is it sufficient for me to state on an ancestry visa application that I only intend to seek unpaid work? If I need to look for paid work, I'll go the spouse visa route instead.
