UK citizenship - Address query

Post by aarti211 » Fri Jun 07, 2013 10:52 am

Hi there,

I had a query about UK citizenship/naturalisation application.

I am eligible for naturalisation after ILR(have a Life in the UK certificate already) and want to apply for the same at the earliest. However, I am planning to change my address in a couple of months.

My questions is:Can I apply for naturalisation now knowing I will changing my residence in a few months?Does address change have any impact in between the whole process of getting the UK passport? What timeframe I am looking at really from the point of submission to getting the passport in hand?

Please let me know.

Thanks

Now gets this straight first. Don't mix naturalisation and passport applications.

Two totally different procedures.

1. Theoretical advice
Yea, no problem changing addressed during the process as long as you update your address with UKBA.

2. Practical advice. Do not act on my theoretical advice. :) Right now, naturalisation applications are being decided in less than 2 months. So, the best way would be to apply for naturalisation now, and once you get your approval letter, move house and then apply for passport.

What if OP not only updates the homeoffice but also set up postal redirection with post office? That will act as a fall back in case home office doesn’t pick up the address change request.

Is there any downside with above scenario?

I know ideal is you don't move home but if you are tenant then it is possible that you have to move home.

I would say from my practical experiences with home office, post office and other government/public bodies is, that in many cases they are not as efficient and on the ball as they seem to be on paper. If I were in the same situation, I would apply when I know I am going to be at the same address until my application is decided, or I would apply once I have moved house.

I past one year, I have my neighbour's mail delivered to my house a few times, and sometimes my mail gets delivered to my neighbour'rs. Just last week the postman somehow cocked up the way he organised his mail, and house number 40 got the mail for house number 39, and house number 41 got the mail for house number 40. It was the same story for the whole street. So, I personally won't trust royal mail specially with BC application.

Best way is to keep things simple. If someone is eligible to apply for BC, and the housing situation is uncertain, then I would rather wait couple of months until I moved, and then I will have total peace of mind that nothing will go missing.

I object with respect. I have checked timelines since March 2013. And many of them didnt hear anything from HO so there is no certainity and some people applied late april got theirs approval with folks who applied late May and besides i have also seen some march, many from april and couple of may applicant counting their time. And right now it is taking less than a month for some people and some waiting since feb . So i would like to suggest applicant not presume things . Think before action and mind setup should be 6 months or even more, it doesnt matter how straight forward or complex application it is but one can be under dealy que for lucks or other factors.
