Post by 075534 » Fri Apr 20, 2007 3:38 pm

Hello

My mother in law has got a right of abode visa (british citizenship by descent) in her foreign passport. She obtained this last year in pakistan. She is now in the UK. Thw question is can she apply for a british passport? If not what is the procedure?

I dearly await any response

"Right of Abode" and British citizenship are not the same thing. What exactly has she got and how did she obtain it. And what's her nationality?

Thank you for the response.

She obtained the visa through her father as he was a british citizen at the time of her birth (born in pakistan, so her nationality is pakistani). She came to the UK last year on a right of abode visa (through descent). So can she apply for a british passport as she has obtained british citizenship through descent?

I await a response

Right of abode is not the same as British citizenship, and is not a visa. It entitles one to most of the benefits of British citizenship with a few exceptions (such as EU citizenship and the right to have a British passport).

Whether or not she has British citizenship is a separate issue. How did her British father obtain his citizenship? Was it by descent, or otherwise than by descent?
