Damage claims and complaints to UKBA

We recently applied for an EEA2 RC for my husband which was issued only after 7.5 months. In the process, UKBA also lost his passport.
We are going to file a complaint to UKBA but were wondering for which costs we could claim compensation?
Surely, replacement of the passport but what about travel costs (we have booked flights that we cannot take without my husband's passport) or loss of salary (we had to take days off work for appointments that we had to cancel last minute because his passport was missing)?
