independent contractor - contracts? (never mind)

Hi everyone,

I've been working as an independent contractor for the last twelve months, however I don't have any written contracts as all of our agreements over the time period were verbal.

Is this going to be a problem for HSMP application? In lieu of a contract can I provide a retrospective statement from the firm I was contracting for that confirms that I was employed for the particular work over the particular time period?

You may have found the answer you are seeking but I am horrified you are working to verbal contracts.

Surely you and the other party want and need to set down the terms of the legal arrangement in writing?

Such arrangements are surprisingly common in New Zealand.. We knew from meeting each other that we could trust each other; I did the work, they paid me, where's the issue?

well, i'm providing them with proper tax invoices, and keeping good records of those, if that's what you mean.

So do you consider yourself caught by the legislation commonly known as IR35? If you don't know the answer, or even worse, don't understand the question, I suggest you speak to your Accountant urgently.
