Time period to enter UK

I have read through the FAQ's on various sites and could not find this:

After the HSMP aproval is received for an out country applicaton, how long does one have before you have to be in the UK?

When does the 12 month timer start: when I set foot at Heathrow or when I get the EC aproval?

I have applied for HSMP 26 June, application received 1 July, no case number received. Still waiting

Dear Benadie
You have to apply for EC within three months after getting HSMP approval.
The 12 month timer starts from the date of EC approval.

Hi,

by now u should also have an HSMP reference number to your application. u need to send an e-mail to HSMP Team qouting ur details including dob to request for this. u need not be waiting...

Thanks for the reply re the HSMP timer start.

What does the refererence number do for you? I applied via a consultant that is based in UK (I'm out country app). I asked them about the reference number and they say it is not important, as HO uses the date of receipt of HSMP application to process it.
