Surrendring Indian passport

If the original Indian passport is cancelled and someone has already got an OCI card, do we have to surrender the cancelled passport?
The reason I ask is because my son's British passport is due for renewal and I understand the OCI has to be renewed as well for the new British passport, at which point they may ask for the surrender certificate
Any official guidance link would be very useful

they may not ask for surrender certificate as he holds an OCI. presume your child's indian passport was cancelled prior May 2010, in that case , if asked, just apply for formal surrender certificate paying reduced fee. submit copies of the old cancelled passport.

Hi there all

Anyone has applied in person at VFS Birmingham within the last couple of months.

I would like to know what the processing times have been as I applied more than 10 days ago and have not yet had the surrender certificate

My timeline as below

Application Date : 20/09/2013 (In person- VFS Birmingham)
VFS Received On: NA
VFS sent to HCI : 23//09/2013 (As per online tracking)
VFS received by HCI : 25/09/2013 (As per online tracking)
Surrender Certificate Issue Date: Waiting
Receipt of Surrendered certificate: Waiting (By Prepaid Special Delivery Envelope)

I am getting a bit worried as I have booked a non-refundable ticket for 17th Oct and once I receive the surrender certificate I still need to apply for the visa as well

My son and I have recently acquired British citizenship and would like to surrender our Indian passports. I have, however, a couple of questions regarding this process and hoping that someone could provide me the answers.

1) I will be travelling on my Indian passport after the date of my naturalization but the entire journey (outbound and inbound) will be completed within the grace period of 3 months. My understanding is that since this travel which will be completed within 3 months it will not be penalized during the surrender process according to the High commissions webpage. Am I right in this understanding?

2) My son who is also registered as a British citizen along with me holds an Indian passport and has travelled to India just before we knew about the outcome of our applications for British citizenship. Unlike my case, he will be returning to the UK after 4 months from the date of his registration. My question now is - Does he have to pay the penalty of £145.0 during his Indian passport surrender upon his return to the UK because the inbound part of the journey is beyond the 3 month grace period?


3) In case my son needs to pay the penalty for his travel outside (just the inbound part) the 3 month grace period, where does this fee need to be paid? Will that be at the VFS where we submit our applications or to the Indian High commission directly?

Yes you will need to pay penalty when you surrender the passport at VFS

You will need to pay penaty at the time of passport surrender at one of VFS centres. High commissionw will not accept directly.

You will be fine as your journey completes within 3 months. For you son, apply for his British Passport now, see if you receive it before your travel, then take it with you. You can also apply for your son British Passport from India, however the application needs to be sent here and processing may take some more time.

You surrender your son Indian passport in India at any FRRO offices within 3 months, and return you son to UK on British Passport. You will not have to pay the penalty.

Draft and Postal Order are the only payment options if you choose to apply by post. Else apply in person and pay by cash or card.

No, old cancelled passport is NOT required. You require only the current Indian passport and attested copies of all used pages of Current indian passport. I dont know ur second question, because I paid at counter.

Many thanks for replying to my questions. I have submitted my application, and my experience is as below.

1. 60-62 Wilton Road, Victoria, London SW1V 1DE is now PERMANENTLY CLOSED. So dont go there. The London offices for surrender of Passport are (refer the VFS site):-
***142-148 Goswell Road, London EC1V 1DE and
***1-3 Canalside, Uxbridge Road, Hayes UB4 0JN.

2. You can either buy the special delivery envelope from post office for £6.95 or pay £10 at VFS counter for return of passport, or collect it yourself.

3. If you want to get email/text alerts on the progress of you application, you need to register for this service by paying £1.35 per application. I did it at the VFS counter.

I submitted my passport surrender application on 19th October,2013@Birmingham.. its been 10 days since I submitted my application - still waiting for my surrender certificate.

Today 28th Octber I called VFS Premium number and found that.

- If you submit your application at VFS London, surrender certificate issued in 4 to 5 working days. (below post from Shaik719 proves the same)
- If you submit at Birmingham VFS - 4 to 5 weeks (my case)
- If you submit at Scotlnad VFS - 10 to 15 weeks.

Can some one explain why there is so much processing time difference between these enters - I regret my decision of using Birmingham centre...rather I should have submitted at London VFS..by now I must have filed my OCI application and enough time before my travel to India in December. Now I am kind struck with this process.

I think it will be interesting to share my application experienc with all, since it can happen with anyone.

I applied for my surrender certificate at VFS London Goswell road office on 14th Oct. On 16th I got an update it has been sent to HCI on 14th itself for processing. On 21st I contacted vfs and they replied by email its with HCI and its upto HCI to decide how much time they are going to take. After that nothing till 23rd.

On 23rd I mailed HCI and to my surprise they replied that they have processed my application on 17th itself and sent the surrender certificate to VFS on 17th itself.

I called up vfs and they still said my application is with HCI and when i told them about the email from HCI they said to go to their office with the copy of email.

at their office on same day they initially said same thing but on showing HCI email they searched and found its actually lying with them since 17th Oct. and the lady over the counter said our system was down since last three days thats why they could not inform me.
I told them its 3 days but application was sent to you by HCI 7 days back what you were doing since then and there was no answer for that with them.

my time lines are
submission of application: 14th Oct (at vfs London in person)
vfs sent to HCI: 14th Oct 2013
Collection of surrender certificate: 24th Oct 2013

Was not informed. Contacted VFS and was told twice that the application is with HCI.
On contacting HCI, I was told that its with VFS since 14th and they informed VFS.
Got email and text confirmation from VFS in few hours.
Collected on 28th Oct.
Have seen similar experience shared by other members.
So I would contact HCI if there is no collection info from VFS in 3-5 days.

Somewhere on this forum read exit permit/VISA is required on British passport to return to UK if entered India on Indian passport, an thoughts about this? I think it is ban.s on this forum said this...is this true senior members please answer? See below

An exit permit is required if a travel document, used during departure from india, is different from the one used during entry.

This normally happens if the original passport was lost/stolen in india and new passport issued or a baby born in india. The same happens if arrival with indian passport and departure on British passport. Exit permit in the latter case will also involve surrendering the indian passport/citizenship in india - which is a complex process (as no proper guideline publicly available and usual hassles at FRRO). If you need to find out more the best option would be to speak with your local FRRO.
