I-485 pending for over 1 year

I have a I-485 pending case for over 1 year and 2 months now. I have called the USCIS customer services twice to follow up my case. The first feedback is FBI background check. Is it same as name check? I heard it can takes up to 5 years. Can anyone knows or had same situation before and get approval? Also. I read some article online that some people write letter to the First Lady and congressman for help. Is it okay thru email or physical letter? I am here to ask for advise!
