theory it is 8 weeks for a straightforward application. Also, not fully evident as when last that targeted timescale was updated.

No. If by using the above link on choosing your relevant category of visa will be provided an email address then you can use that one. Otherwise telephone contact the only option will be left.

The information you got from them is correct. Not until you have waited for some considerable period unusually long, contacting MP may not yield much especially with the backlogs being dealt with by HO. The waiting is excruciating.

Yes precisely. Also not all MPs are helpful or even willing to help over immigration issues so don't place a lot of your expectation on them from the very beginning.
