Travelling with Indian and British passport

Post by lovelyhasu » Mon Jun 24, 2013 7:07 am

My son was born in UK and holds Indian passport. We have applied for Naturalisation through MN1 and planning for BP later.
We are planning to go to India in September.
So question is can he travel on his Indian passport? And return on British passport? (He does not have any UK visa as we never travelled after he was born)
…I understand that he can surrender his Indian passport and get visitor VISA for 5 years but what I was thinking that if surrender process takes longer then we will be stuck. I am expecting he should get British passport by Mid-august.

Would appreciate help from you well informed people!

I don't know how long are you planning to stay in india or when in Sept you intend to travel. If I were you I would have sorted Indian visa from UK than going though the hassle of passport surrender, exit visa etc in india.
Again, i don't know your location, but if you submit passport surrender in person at VFS london it will normally take 3 working days plus 3-4 days for visa.

please read 'exit visa' as 'exit permit' - sorry for the typo.

you need to use the same travel document that you used to enter india during your departure as well. if different travel document needs to be used, then you need to get an exit permit from FRRO/MHA.
being an indian passport holder the child will not get exit permit on british passport until the surrender of indian passport. so if you decide to travel with indian passport and return with British one, then you have sort out both passport surrender and exit permit formalities in india.

thanks Ban.s

seems like hassle! ...surrendering before leaving seems wise option

I saw a post by user "kkhhyyaattii10" that she travelled with two passports.
http://www.immigrationboards.com/other- ... 42501.html

Was she having a valid BRP when she travelled?

My case:
Our 3-year old daughter's Tier1 dependent BRP expired on Jan 6 (2014). We didn't apply for her ILR but directly applied for naturalisation as both her parents had ILR. The date on her Certificate of Registration as a British Citizen is 24th Feb. She now has a British Passport as well. But she has not yet surrendered her Indian PP.

Urgent travel:
My wife (she has ILR and a valid Indian passport so no issues) need to travel urgently to Ahmedabad for a medical operation. Can the three-year old visit India on her Indian Passport accompanied with her mom? If yes then she will leave Heathrow and enter Ahmedabad on Indian PP. On her return journey she will leave Ahmedabad on Indian PP and re-enter Heathrow on British PP.

Majority of users of this forum travelled during their 3-month grace period with a valid BRP - this is not the case with my daughter. So I think, if kkhhyyaattii10 travelled without a valid BRP, we can have peace of mind as my daughter's case will be exactly same as her.

I will highly appreciate if anyone can answer this.
Many thanks in advance
