English requirements when studied in the uk

Post by Haroon999 » Sat Oct 18, 2014 1:32 pm

Hi all,

I am asking on behalf of a friend who has applied for British citizenship a couple months ago.

She has received a letter with a deadline to prove her knowledge of English...in the original application she provided a post-graduate diploma from a uk university thinking it would be sufficient, however it seems not the case.

I checked NARIC and they provide a fast track service but not for degrees except postgrad diploma and certificate and 10-15 working days is normal which would mean missing the deadline given by the case worker.

A bit confused now how to proceed...but I was thinking maybe someone has been through similar experience and can advise...

Do you know the type of diploma? See here on page 39.

Only if the diploma requires an undergraduate degree it should be accepted as proof of English ability. Her options depends on whether she has a degree or not. If she does not have a degree the quickest way is to find a suitable English B1 level test which is about £150. If she does have a degree and it's from the UK or the diploma required her to have the degree send that as proof. If the degree is not from the UK she will have to send it to NARIC and send the degree and the NARIC certificate in.

No degree - sit B1 test
UK degree - is proof in itself of English so send that in
Non-UK degree - send NARIC + degree OR if degree needed for diploma just degree

I find it hard to believe that a UK University's degree isn't enough.

Experts can tell you better, but what I would have done is just a cover letter telling my degree is taught in UK university in English and would attach a UK NARIC / Point-based calculator print out proving the University is on list of institutions, where medium of education is English.

But yes Jambo and other moiderators etc can tell you better.
Being British is a state of mind.
